In a league to lead

A pharmacy scholar from CUHK was recognized as one of the world’s 110 most promising leaders under 40 by a reputed international network.

Billy Ng, assistant professor at the School of Pharmacy, made it to the 2022 class of Young Global Leaders hosted by the World Economic Forum. Ng is the only Hongkonger taking a spot in the academia and think-tank category.

Leading the Laboratory of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery, he developed therapeutic molecules to combat viruses and aging-related diseases. His team were the first to discover a drug for hepatitis C virus can be repurposed for the treatment of COVID-19. To ease the medical burden of an aging society, Ng is now working on molecules which may ultimately eradicate cancers and neurodegenerative diseases.

A homegrown scholar who received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in chemistry at CUHK, Ng completed his postdoc at Harvard Medical School and Oxford. He was a Fulbright Scholar at Massachusetts Institute of Technology during his graduate study, and was recipient of numerous awards including the Marie Curie Fellowship, Croucher Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship, and Hong Kong PhD Fellowship.
