Cross-border partnership deepened

A tripartite agreement has been signed between CUHK, CUHK-Shenzhen and the Shenzhen municipal government in late February at the Government House, signalling the three parties’ intention to deepen collaborations on education, research and technology transfer.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Chan Kwok-ki, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong government, Qin Weizhong, Mayor of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, Cheuk Wing-hing, Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong government and Zeng Bai, Member of the Standing Committee of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee.

The agreement will see CUHK-Shenzhen expand its student enrolment and improve its quality of teaching and learning, with a focus on enlarging the scale of masters and post-doctoral fellowship programmes, and explore multiple channels for institutional financing. The Shenzhen government will allocate new land for the Shenzhen campus to expand its premises.

To address social and economic needs of the Greater Bay Area, the two campuses will join hands in researching artificial intelligence, microelectronics and robotics. With the backing of the Shenzhen government, they will jointly build a School of Public Policy and a School of Microelectronics, and push for mutual growth of their medical schools and hospitals.

The Shenzhen government supports both campuses to take part in key development projects of the Greater Bay Area, including the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone, the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone, and the Universiade Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Science and Education City. The forthcoming university science and technology park in Shenzhen will foster the integration between industry and education and allow CUHK to contribute to the national strategies on education, innovation and talent cultivation.
