Kick-starting summer vacation at Uganda
After months of studying, students deserve to have a truly relaxing holiday before the new term begins. A group of 15 CUHK students from United College and CW Chu College chose an unusual way to kick-start summer vacation. Having participated in a Service-learning Programme under the United College GOAL (Globe-Oriented Active Learning) Programme, they visited Uganda, Africa from 19 May to 2 June, delivering voluntary services to underprivileged locals including orphans, widows and single mothers.
The programme is jointly organised by Watoto Asia and United College. Dr Tony Yung, lecturer from the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care and Dr Tony Chan, the College Secretary, accompanied the students on this 15-day trip.
Visiting local families and Watoto Children Village
Poverty, sex trafficking and HIV infection are problems prevalent in Uganda. The group of CUHK students visited Watoto Children Village, Baby Watoto and poverty slums. They took care of babies at the orphanage, and organised training workshops to empower women by teaching them different skills to earn a living and support their families.
Building the first Toy Library in Watoto
Before departure, the group of students launched a special campaign to collect second-hand toys in Hong Kong. They cleaned the toys, repaired the broken parts, and transported them to Uganda. In just three days’ time, the group revitalised a classroom into a toy library filled with different toys and beautiful decorations for young children (from 6 – 12 years old) to relax and play.
Alongside voluntary services, students also visited local markets and the safari. They gained valuable experiences and widened their exposures to different cultures. It was a fulfilling and meaningful journey.
