Welcome to the 43rd edition of CUHK in Focus.
CUHK has commissioned globally renowned bibliometrics and data analytics firm Elsevier to study the megatrends driving research impact in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. A report giving findings from the study was launched at a special event that took place at CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute this Monday. This represents an important piece of work to examine the impact of CUHK research in the region across a range of key metrics spanning citations, knowledge exchange potential and research collaboration from 2018 to 2022, assessing its performance relative to other universities in Hong Kong and the wider GBA. It aims to capture CUHK and Hong Kong’s contribution to the GBA’s research ecosystem.
The report highlights the remarkable growth of the GBA as a dominant force in research and development. It also reveals that CUHK research contributions constitute 5.4% of the region’s overall research output and 7.4% of its excellent research output. Such an accomplishment is truly impressive for a university that began focusing on research intensity only in the 1990s and is a testament to CUHK’s commitment to high-quality research.
The report also delves into collaborative research activities in the GBA. While 30.2% of the GBA’s research collaborations involve international partners, it is noteworthy that the figure reaches 42.9% for CUHK, indicating the University’s strong engagement in research collaborations compared to its counterparts in Hong Kong and the broader region. This level of collaborative activities demonstrates CUHK’s commitment to our longstanding mission to bring together China and the West. Moreover, the impact of research at CUHK, measured by the field weighted citation impact (FWCI) index, is the highest among all institutions in the GBA, a testament to the outstanding accomplishments of members of the CUHK research community. The report serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of a robust research ecosystem to drive the development of New Quality Productive Forces in alignment with national strategy. CUHK will continue to leverage its research capacity to contribute to the development of the GBA as an economic powerhouse of our nation.
New partnership with Guangdong
Yesterday, CUHK was honoured to host a landmark ceremony marking the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between three joint ventures of Hong Kong universities with their sister institutions in the mainland and the Guangdong Provincial Government. It gave me great pleasure to sign the MoU on behalf of the University as it signals the beginning of a new chapter in collaboration between Hong Kong institutions and their mainland counterparts, providing a framework for driving joint research and cutting-edge technology development. With the conventional model for Chinese-foreign cooperation between institutions largely predicated on education, this new partnership is a strong indication of the growing importance of universities in driving research and development in our nation. The fact that CUHK was chosen to host this significant ceremony is also a much-cherished recognition of the acclaim that the collaboration between CUHK and CUHK-Shenzhen has been enjoying under the “One Brand, Two Campuses” framework. We are thankful for the trust and support from the Guangdong Provincial Government. Their support for academic partnerships will enable us to leverage our respective strengths and resources to cultivate an academic ecosystem that is conducive to joint research and nurtures innovation initiatives to achieve greater milestones together.
Tribute to Honorary Fellows
The Honorary Fellowship Presentation Ceremony is an annual occasion for us to recognise outstanding members of the CUHK community and others in society who have contributed to the development of this institution. This year, we are delighted to honour seven extraordinary individuals for their contributions to CUHK and to society at large. Each of them has made remarkable achievements in their own professional field and is recognised for their time-honoured commitment and services to the University, advancing its development as a leading institution for higher learning. It was a privilege for me to attend a dinner event that took place earlier this week to offer my sincere congratulations to the Honorary Fellows in person on the accolade they so richly deserve and express my gratitude to them for their continuous and selfless support for the University.
Best wishes for CUHKSZ graduates
Lastly, I am pleased to offer my sincere congratulations to the graduation class of 2024 at CUHK-Shenzhen. Their graduation in this auspicious year marking CUHK-Shenzhen’s 10th anniversary year bears a truly special meaning. Whatever their future holds, I hope all graduates will bear in mind the University motto, “Through Learning and Temperance to Virtue”, and strive for continuous intellectual and moral enrichment, while keeping their heart and mind open for what the world has to offer. May their future be filled with success and fulfillment.
I look forward to sharing more stories with you in our next edition.
