The ‘alchemy of stories’ in TEDxCUHK 2024
Nine speakers, including CUHK professors and guests from outside, inspired students with their colourful life stories in TEDxCUHK 2024 on May 18, a full-day event organised by 30 students with the support of the Office of Student Affairs.
This year, TEDxCUHK returned with the theme “The Alchemy of Stories” at Lee Shau Kee Building, where the speakers shared their unique blends of wisdom, struggle and hope with an audience of about 100 students. Professor Apple Chui Pui-yi from the School of Life Sciences spoke about how she overcame the challenges of restoring coral in highly urbanised Hong Kong. Professor Roger Chung Yat-nork from the Centre of Bioethics gave his insights on inequalities and justice. Clinical psychologist Dr Tsang Wai-fung reflected on lessons he learned from plant medicine and indigenous elders in the Amazon. TED coach Aaron Leung talked about his journey in public speaking.
Other speakers also offered their unique narratives: Social innovator Charlton Shiu Cheuk-lam on resilience amidst adversity, financial consultant Dicky Poon on sales mentality, marketing leader Fiona Tin on orchestrating “a life of growth from within”, financial planner Tiffany Ng on the importance of financial education, and educator Vera Lui on changing attitudes towards sexual matters in Hong Kong.
The participants were encouraged to not just listen to the speakers, but also reflect on the ideas and connect them with their own experience. The organisers believed that with the event, seeds were planted in the young minds and would have the potential to grow into powerful forces of change in their life.
