CUHK members of Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program join fruitful summer program in Shanghai
Nine CUHK students who are also scholars of Bai Xian Asia Institute’s Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program have spent an exciting summer at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, learning about digital transformation and Chinese cultural heritage along with their peers from the region.
They were among 64 Bai Xian Scholars that gathered for a two-week summer programme themed “Digital Transformation in Asia” in early August, where the group took part in a series of panel discussions, personal development workshops, excursions and community-building activities. They also had valuable opportunities to hear from leaders and experts from various fields.
“One of the highlights for me was the self-awareness workshop, which I found really engaging and interesting,” said Ayana Mukanova, a Bai Xian Scholar majoring in Systems Engineering and Engineering Management at CUHK, who took part in the summer programme. “Hearing our personalities explained to us in such depth made us feel ‘exposed’ and ‘naked,’ but I believe this ultimately helps us grow and enables us to develop ourselves as future leaders.”
Reflecting on the academic portion of the programme, May Oo Nyan, another scholar from CUHK who majors in Global Studies, said: “After hearing from the speaker, I discovered how digital transformation actually pertains to all of us and our future, and therefore is something we all need to learn about. I am grateful for this opportunity to hear more about this important subject.”
Bai Xian Asia Institute is a not-for-profit educational organisation that runs the Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program, which awards up to 100 scholarships each year to students from Asia to study abroad at top universities across East Asia. CUHK has been a proud partner of Bai Xian since its early days, with both sharing the goal of nurturing a new generation of leaders who embrace diversity and are committed to promoting peace, regional collaboration, and harmony in Asia and beyond.
Speaking on the Institute’s 10th anniversary, Ronna Chao, chief executive officer of Bai Xian Asia Institute, said: “Education is a long-term investment. As we celebrate 10 years of building bridges across cultures, we look forward to forging ahead in our efforts to develop a new generation of leaders through intercultural exchange and learning, while cultivating a sense of community and mutual understanding amidst a changing global landscape.”
Bai Xian Asia Institute’s network includes eight partner universities in East Asia, namely CUHK, Hitotsubashi ICS, Kyoto University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua University, and Waseda University.
