Chung Chi Student Development Complex celebrates grand opening

The first ever redevelopment project of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s Chung Chi College (CCC), the Chung Chi Student Development Complex, had its grand opening and naming ceremony on 28 October 2022. This symbolises a new milestone in Chung Chi’s educational mission. As the new landmark at Chung Chi Campus, the Complex will provide extensive indoor activity spaces to cater for students’ whole-person development.

Officiating at the ceremony were Chairman of CCC Board of Trustees Dr Norman T. L. Chan, CUHK Vice-President and University Secretary Mr Eric S. P. Ng, CCC Head Professor Fong Wing-ping, Honorary Treasurer of CCC Board of Trustees Mr Terence C. W. Chan, Trustee and former Chairman of CCC’s Development Committee Dr Karl C. Kwok, Trustee and Chairman of CCC’s former Steering Committee for Development Office Mr Thomas W. C. Kwong, Trustee and former member of CCC’s Development Committee Mr Jimmy S. W. Chan, former member of CCC’s Development Committee Dr Wong Fook-yee, and Trustee and member of CCC’s Development Committee Professor Fung Tung. More than 100 guests, members of the University and supporters of the College attended the ceremony to witness this historic moment.

Dr Norman T. L. Chan commented, “The redevelopment project spanned six years from concept development to commencement, during which it encountered various difficulties, especially the pandemic. Thanks to the support of the College and the University, the construction of the Complex was completed successfully.” In addition to acknowledging the efforts of committee members and colleagues, he also expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the generous donations from all Chung Chi-ers, dignitaries in the community and friends.

Mr Eric S. P. Ng shared his joy in seeing the connectivity between CCC and the main campus that the Complex brings, facilitating and enriching the campus life of Chung Chi and CUHK students. “With the double-deck footbridge joining the two blocks of the Complex across the slope, students can easily access the two engineering buildings and the University’s main campus,” he said. “This is undoubtedly a win-win development for both the wider University and Chung Chi.”

Professor Fong Wing-ping added, “This innovatively designed Complex will continue to implement Chung Chi’s mission of whole person education, providing an ideal learning environment for students to realise their talent and potential.” He expected the Complex to become a new gathering point for students, empowering them to learn and grow from the experience of non-formal education programmes, and enhancing their sense of belonging to the College.

The Chung Chi Student Development Complex is CCC’s first campus development project. Following the kick-off of the fundraising campaign in 2017 and the demolition of staff quarters Blocks D & G, the project commenced in 2018 and construction was completed in October 2022. The Complex is in a twin block design, consisting of Kunkle Student Centre (Low Block) and Leung Fung Yee Building (High Block), with facilities and shared spaces to satisfy students’ needs in event planning, learning, exhibitions, personal growth and social interactions.
