Five scholars from CUHK received awards under the 2022-23 Research Grants Council (RGC) Senior Research Fellow Scheme and RGC Research Fellow Scheme in recognition of their distinguished research achievements.

CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sham Mai-har said, “I am proud of the outstanding research achievements of the five professors. I would like to congratulate them in receiving the RGC awards in recognition of their research work, and wish them continued success in their research endeavours.”

Three CUHK scholars were named in the RGC Senior Research Fellow Scheme (SRFS). They are Professor Bryan Mercurio, Faculty of Law, Professor Liu Renbao, Department of Physics, and Professor Raymond Yeung Wai-ho, Department of Information Engineering. Professor Bryan Mercurio’s research project is “Access to vaccines in a post-COVID-19 world: Sustainable legal and policy options”, Professor Liu Renbao’s is “Quantum nonlinear spectroscopy – A new paradigm of quantum sensing”, and Professor Raymond Yeung’s is “Research and development of network coding technologies”. Each SRFS awardee will be given the title “RGC Senior Research Fellow” and CUHK will receive a fellowship grant of about HK$7.8 million per award to cover salary costs for relief teachers and support for research projects over a period of five years.

Professor Kathy Lui Oi-lan, Department of Chemical Pathology, and Professor Lu Yi-chun, Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, were named in the RGC Research Fellow Scheme (RFS). The research project of Professor Kathy Lui is “Molecular mechanisms underlying T-cell regulation of vascular disease, repair and regeneration”, and that of Professor Lu Yi-chun is “Polysulfide-based aqueous redox flow batteries with high stability and high-power density for low-cost and long-duration energy storage”. Each RFS awardee will be given the title “RGC Research Fellow” and CUHK will receive a fellowship grant of about HK$5.2 million per award to cover salary costs for relief teachers and support for research projects over a period of five years.
