CUHK delivers its strongest performance in THE World University Rankings, taking the 45th slot
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has been placed 45th in the newly released Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023, four slots up from last year and marking its best performance in the league table since it started in 2010.
It is also the seventh consecutive year the University has made to the world’s top 100.
CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan, who attended the THE World Academic Summit in New York last week, said he was thrilled to see the University remain on an upward trajectory.
He said: “The Times Higher Education 2023 World University Rankings result is a testament of the outstanding talent, and extraordinary dedication and vision of the entire CUHK community. Research and innovation, global engagement, and development and recruitment are all core objectives of the CUHK Strategic Plan 2021-2025, and are anchored by our mission to achieve excellence with purpose and responsibility. This result speaks volumes about our commitment to excellence, and I am truly inspired by and grateful to our community’s dedication to the pursuit of excellence in everything that we do.
“With Hong Kong’s evolution and transition to a knowledge-based economy and integration with the nation’s development, our world-class universities are primed to make vital contributions to the city’s endeavours as a super connector between China and the world,” he continued. “This globally recognised academic standing of CUHK is indeed a strong vote of confidence in the university’s capacity to contribute to these important tasks.”
CUHK achieved an overall score of 73.2 this year, up from 71.3 in the last assessment.
This year’s THE World University Rankings included 1,799 universities across 104 countries and regions. It assessed research-intensive institutions based on 13 performance indicators across the five core missions of teaching, research, research influence i.e., citations, international outlook and industry income, using 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators.
Among the 13 performance indicators, CUHK attained the highest possible mark in “research income to academic staff” and “publications per staff member”, and scored 99.9 in both “institutional income to academic staff” and “the proportion of international academic staff”. Significant advancement was made in “teaching reputation” and “research reputation” compared to last year.
