All about the kicks

More than 140 alumni, students, and staff of the Science Faculty formed 12 teams and gathered bright and early on 16 April 2023 for some seven-a-side football fun at Sir Philip Haddon-cave Sports Field, as part of the Science Faculty’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

Much to the delight of everyone, the relaxing of social distancing measures in 2023 has enabled the Faculty to organise in-person activities to mark its Diamond Jubilee. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dean of Science Professor Song Chunshan remarked that he was glad to see such a warm turn-out for the tournament, especially for a number of alumni who might not have had the chance to return to campus over the last few years. Professor Song also shared that the Faculty will be organising a number of activities throughout 2023, urging all Science Faculty alumni, students, staff, and friends to stay tuned to further announcements and the Faculty of Science website.

Despite the weather being unusually hot that day, the 12 teams played hard to fight for the championship title. The team that came out on top was FNS, comprised of one Food and Nutritional Sciences (FNSC) Programme staff and 13 FNSC alumni; the team managed to score a total of 14 goals across three games of the tournament, and became the highest-scoring team of the day. The 1st Runner-up team was StatHero, comprised of 14 alumni who studied mathematical and statistical sciences. The 2nd Runner-up position was awarded to MLE, composed of three staff, seven students, and two alumni. The Faculty is grateful for the enthusiastic participation by the teams, and looks forward to hosting more sports tournaments in the future, providing opportunities for alumni, students, and teachers to get connected over healthy sports.
