In Memory of Dr David Sin Wai-kin
Dr David Sin Wai-kin, a former member of the Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), passed away on 17 April 2023, at the age of 94. CUHK is profoundly saddened by the passing of Dr Sin and offer its deepest condolences to his family.
Professor Rocky S. Tuan, CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President, said: “Over the years, Dr Sin gave maximum support to education. His close association with the University started in the 1980s when he became a member of the University Council. He was also a member of New Asia College’s Board of Trustees. He served on the University’s Finance Committee, the Committee on Donations and as chairman of the Tender Board. He sponsored many academic projects of the University, such as the Three-Year MBA Programme, the C.N. Yang Visiting Professorship Fund, the establishment of the Research Centre for Contemporary Chinese Culture under the Institute of Chinese Studies, scholarships in arts, history and philosophy, as well as an endowed professorship in Chinese culture. I would like to offer our deepest condolence to Dr Sin’s family on behalf of our teachers, students and alumni.”
Dr Sin’s benevolence also extended to the mainland. He generously donated to the establishment of the Sun Yat-sen University Advanced Research Centre, of which he was vice chairman. He was also honorary adviser of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou.
Dr Sin was vice-chairman of Miramar Hotel and Investment Co. Ltd. An outstanding entrepreneur, Dr Sin attained landmark achievements in the development of Hong Kong’s jewellery exports. The Myer Jewelry Manufacturer Ltd., of which Dr Sin was chairman, has maintained a sizable share of jewellery export over the years and is one of the few local companies to have successfully entered the Japanese market. He was also honorary adviser of the Hong Kong Jewellers’ and Goldsmiths’ Association Ltd. and chairman and member of the Jewellery Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.
As his jewellery business expanded, so did Dr Sin’s other business interests. Dr Sin was vice-chairman of Hip Hing Construction Co. Ltd. He was also a director of New World Development Co. Ltd., New World Hotel (Holdings) Ltd., and the Hang Seng Bank Ltd.
