CUHK History Gallery reopens
After over a year of renovation work, the CUHK History Gallery (formerly known as the University Gallery) reopened on 20 September, adding vibrancy to the University’s diamond jubilee.
With a generous donation from the T.S. Kwok Foundation, CUHK set up the University Gallery in 2013 in celebration of its Golden Jubilee. Located at the main entrance of the University Library, the gallery showcased hundreds of precious photographs and artefacts that engaged visitors, students, staff and alumni in a journey through time to explore the history and achievements of the University.
To celebrate the 60th Anniversary, the University Gallery was officially renamed the CUHK History Gallery and underwent refurbishment in 2022 with the guidance of our Pro-Vice-Chancellors, Vice-Presidents and kind assistance from Colleges, Faculties and units.
On 19 September, the opening ceremony of the refurbished History Gallery was presided by former CUHK Vice-Chancellors Professor Ambrose King (2nd from the right, photo above) and Professor Lawrence J. Lau (1st from left, photo above); Chairperson of the CUHK 60th Anniversary Celebration Steering Committee, Ms Lina Yan Hau-yee (1st from the right, photo above); Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Rocky S. Tuan (2nd from the left, photo above).
The refurbished History Gallery comprises nine zones covered different themes such as “The Founding of CUHK”, “Excellence in Education”, “Exploration and Innovation, China Studies: Tradition and Modernity”, “From a Barren Hill to a Thriving University Town”, and “Contributing to the Nation and Facing the World”. New exhibits include historical photographs, artefacts, as well as enhanced multimedia materials and interactive devices. The “Donor Wall” displays names of University’s major benefactors. Visitors can know more about CUHK through the videos of oral history project played at the “mini theatre” and take pictures in front of the University’s landmarks at the “photo booth”.
