92nd Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees
The month of November is a time when CUHK graduates return to campus, celebrating one of the most important milestones of their lives with family and friends. The University held its 92nd Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees on 9 November, with Council chairman Professor John Chai presiding over the occasion and conferring 620 doctoral, 7,845 master’s and 5,133 bachelor’s degrees.
Delivering Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan’s address, Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Chan commended graduates on the tenacity they have shown to survive the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic. He added that they have the honour of graduating during the University’s diamond jubilee year.
Riding on the key message of the University’s 60th anniversary, “where great minds shine”, he spelt out his aspirations for the class of 2023.
“You are all great minds. Apart from your intellectual capability and academic achievements, we believe the education you received at CUHK has nurtured you to become socially responsible citizens, endowed with a capacity for critical thinking, empathy, kindness and respect. These are the qualities that make you shine.
“As proud graduates of a university that stands at the forefront of addressing the global challenges of our time, you have the knowledge and skills to play a critical and rewarding role… In your pursuit of truths and solutions to tackle these crises, always believe in the power of every small action you take, for they have the potential to create a ripple effect—or, in chaos theory, a butterfly effect—and make a huge difference.”
The University also bestowed on three distinguished individuals—Dr Norman Chan Tak-lam, Dr Norman Leung Nai-pang and Professor Helga Nowotny—honorary doctorates of social science for their immense contributions to economic, scientific and educational development in Hong Kong and around the world.
