Nexoedge becomes first standardised open-source university project from Hong Kong
CUHK’s Nexoedge project has recently been endorsed by the US’ Linux Foundation as its first standardised open-source university project from Hong Kong. Nexoedge is the output of recent research conducted by the University’s Faculty of Engineering, and has now been selected as one of the first batch of members of the Deep-Tech Lab (DTL) Accelerator Programme from the CUHK Centre for Entrepreneurship (CfE), an incubation programme for “deep tech” start-ups which aims to build an information exchange platform that brings together start-ups, investors, mentors and university students with a passion for entrepreneurship.
The CfE has been a member of the Linux Foundation, a non-profit organisation which supports open-source software projects, since early 2023.
“CUHK’s Nexoedge project is a welcome addition to the open source community,” said Arpit Joshipuas, general manager, Networking, Edge, and IoT, at the Linux Foundation. “Security and data privacy and protection are more important than ever, and with Nexoedge’s innovative use of encryption and network coding algorithms, the ecosystem can be confident that information shared across the edge is secure and reliable. We are looking forward to watching the Nexoedge project grow within the community.”
To accelerate Nexoedge’s goal of internationalisation, the project plans to establish a Silicon Valley headquarters in 2024. “Through the combination of the ecosystems of Nexoedge and the Linux Foundation, we can better realise the deployment and application of edge computing, further promoting its rapid development,” said co-founder Aldous Ng.
“We have been conducting applied academic research on improving the dependability of large-scale storage and networked systems, and Nexoedge is built on our prior research,” said Patrick Lee, Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and co-founder of Nexoedge. “We are very excited that our innovations and efforts are recognized by Linux Foundation. We hope that our research can bring substantial industrial impact to the storage community.”
