Council appointments

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Amendment) Ordinance 2023 has come into force since the gazettal of the Amendment Bill on 10 November 2023. Following said gazettal, the commencement of the reorganised council with new composition has taken effect on the same date.

The following persons have been appointed as members of the Council, in accordance with The Chinese University of Hong Kong Ordinance:

  • Persons nominated by the Boards of Trustees of the original Colleges and of the Shaw College and the Committees of Overseers of the additional Colleges, in accordance with Statute 11.1(e),
    • for a period from 26 January to 7 December 2024:
      • Mr Stewart Cheng Kam-chiu, Shaw College
    • for a period of one year from 2 February 2024:
      • Professor Nelson Chen, Morningside College
      • Professor Wong Wing-shing, S.H. Ho College
  • 2 persons elected by, and from among, the Heads of the original Colleges and of Shaw College and the Masters of the additional Colleges, in accordance with Statute 11.1(f), for a period of one year from 19 January 2024:
    • Professor Kwan Mei-po, Head of Chung Chi College
    • Professor Anthony Chan Tak-cheung, Master of Wu Yee Sun College
  • 2 persons elected by, and from among, the Deans of the Faculties and the Dean of the Graduate School, in accordance with Statute 11.1(g), for a period of one year from 22 January 2024:
    • Professor Chiu Chi-yue, Dean of Social Science
    • Professor Anthony So Man-cho, Dean of the Graduate School

Introduction to new appointees

Mr Stewart Cheng Kam-chiu is the chairman and executive director of New Times Energy Corporation Limited, and managing director of Cheung Hung Development (Holdings) Limited. A professional engineer with extensive experience in property development and construction management, Mr Cheng is also a member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and has taken an active role in urban construction.

Professor Nelson Chen was the Director of School of Architecture of CUHK and is the Principal Architect of Nelson Chen Architects. He has received over 40 major design awards and is a Fellow of the American, British and Hong Kong Institutes of Architects as well as founding president of American Institute of Architects Hong Kong.

Professor Wong Wing-shing was the Chairman of Department of Information Engineering, Dean of the Graduate School and Master of S.H. Ho College of CUHK. He served as Science Advisor at the HKSAR Innovation and Technology Commission, Board Director of Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and Chairman of ASTRI Technology Committee. Professor Wong is a Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences.
