Together We Shine

Special educational needs and wellness week

“Together We Shine: Special Educational Needs & Wellness Week” was held by Special Educational Needs Service (SENS) and Wellness and Counselling Centre (WACC) of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) from 19 to 23 February. A series of activities were organised to promote SEN, campus inclusion and mental wellness among the CUHK community.

The event commenced with various three-day game booths including “Red Cross UniVAL: Mental ‘Help’”, “Mindful DIY”, “Emotion Take or Leave”, and “Learn the Dots and Speak in Sign” at the Cultural Square. Participants were able to release their emotions, foster positive vibes and gain a deeper understanding of special education needs. Over 1,000 students and staff actively shared their moments by sticking their photos on the photo mosaic wall showcasing the iconic campus scenery.

University Dean of Students Professor Ko Wing-hung (third from left) and Director at the OSA Elaine Tam (third from right) also joined the event to have fun with students

Various workshops were also organised during the week. For instance, “Mindful Workshop: Self-compassion & Mindfulness” nurtured participants’ self-compassion and mindfulness; while “Mindful Workshop: Healing Sound and Art Therapy” encouraged participants to explore and express emotions through different mediums of art.

“Experiential Learning Workshop: Guided Dog and Sighted Guide Technique Training” invited guide dog users to share their experiences on guide techniques and training methods

The week of wellness was concluded with a screening of the movie Time Still Turns The Pages which attracted more than 200 CUHK students and staff members. During the post-screening discussion, movie director Nick Cheuk shared with the audience online his script ideas and film production details. Topics related to mental health and youth suicide were also brought up in the session.

Executive Director of Samaritans Hong Kong Tsang Chin-kwok, Co-Directors of the CUHK Centre for Bioethics Professor Roger Chung and Dr Ann Lau provided insightful perspectives at the discussion

“I may not be able to help you, but I will be with you.” – It is one of the most iconic lines from Time Still Turns The Pages. CUHK is where you can find your supporters. CUHKers, let us shine together!
