CUHK achieves record-breaking result in the QS World University Rankings, placing 36th in the world

CUHK has soared 11 places in the latest prestigious QS World University Rankings to 36th place, its highest ever position in the academic league table since it started in 2010.

The QS World University Rankings 2025 analysed institutional performance across nine critical indicators: academic reputation, citations per faculty, employer reputation, employment outcomes, faculty-student ratio, international faculty, international research network, international students, and sustainability. The 2025 edition features over 1,500 universities from around the world. CUHK’s performance places it in the top 3% of universities in the rankings, consolidating its leading position in the higher education sector.

CUHK’s performance in the nine assessment indicators

CUHK outperformed the global median results in all fields. Among the nine performance indicators, CUHK attained full marks in “international faculty” and scored 92.9 in “citations per faculty”. The University achieved an international faculty ratio of 56.5 compared to a global median of 7.8, and a 229.8 normalised citations per faculty member against a global median of 52.3.

CUHK improved in the scores of the majority of indicators.  Notably, CUHK improved significantly in the sustainability ranking, advancing 132 places from last year. CUHK is known for its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and its thought leadership in the creation and application of practical solutions for sustainable development. This emphasis on sustainability is one of the key factors in CUHK’s overall rise in the rankings.

CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan said he was thrilled to witness how far the University has come. “This remarkable accomplishment is a powerful validation of CUHK’s relentless pursuit of academic excellence and our ability to rival the world’s best universities. Our passionate and talented faculty, students and staff have collectively contributed to driving the University’s success on the global stage. This recognition inspires us to build on our momentum and deepen our dedication to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and innovation, and to maintain our dedicated focus on sustainability and developing real-world solutions, in service of a better future for all.”

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 were announced in April. CUHK secured the top position in Hong Kong for eight subjects and ranked among the top 50 in the world in 17 subjects and two subject areas.

CUHK’s first-in-Hong Kong subjects in the league table are anthropology, classic and ancient history, communication and media studies, medicine, nursing, philosophy, sports-related subjects, and theology, divinity and religious studies. The University has proved its mettle on the global stage, and its well-rounded achievements are reflected in various world university rankings.
