Linguistic scholars’ intellectual feast at CUHK

The GBA Forum on Chinese Grammar and the Tenth Inter-Regional Forum on Dialectal Grammar

Organised by the T.T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre (CLRC) of the Institute of Chinese Studies and co-organised by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance for Chinese (GHMUAC), the Greater Bay Area Forum on Chinese Grammar was held on 26 June at CUHK. Scholars from different universities, including Professors Deng Dun and Pan Haihua from CUHK and Professor Gu Yang from CUHK-Shenzhen, gathered to share their research findings and insights on the topic. Director of CLRC Professor Tang Sze-wing hoped the forum could help enhance research impact in the Greater Bay Area, so as to showcase the strengths of Chinese grammar and embrace challenges brought by the advancement of technology.

Professor Tang delivers a welcoming address at the forum

The Tenth Inter-Regional Forum on Dialectal Grammar was held on 27-28 June at CUHK. Organised by the CLRC of the Institute of Chinese Studies, the forum featured a keynote speech by Professor Audrey Li Yen-hui. During the two-day event, over 30 scholars from CUHK and universities in the mainland presented their research findings and shared insights.

The theme of discussions was “the sentence-final de in Chinese dialects”, covering Min, Yue, Wu, Ke, Gan and Northern dialects. Professor Tang mentioned that it was impossible to address all issues concerning the sentence-final particle de in two days. He hoped this forum could serve as a starting point to help scholars deepen their understanding of this phenomenon and uncover new research questions. Next year, the forum will be held at Sun Yat-sen University with the tentative theme of “the sentence-final clusters of functional words in Chinese dialects”.
