New faces from around the world

Bright young minds from diverse backgrounds join CUHK family

CUHK has admitted around 800 non-local students this year. They come with diverse qualifications and entered CUHK with outstanding academic results in a wide range of public examinations.

Many of the non-local students come from 24 countries including Bangladesh, Belarus, Cyprus, France, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. Among them, 23 are recipients of Belt and Road Scholarships that the Hong Kong government offers for students from the region.

Other students were recruited from the mainland, Taiwan and Macau. Through the National Unified Universities and Colleges Entrance Examination System (Gaokao), 413 undergraduate students were admitted from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions of mainland China. Among them, 33 are from ethnic minorities.

All new students are excited to embark on a new journey at CUHK.

Non-local students

Jose Manuel Cervantes Sanchez (Mexico, Global Communication)

Jose was awarded CUHK’s University Admission Scholarship to major in Global Communication. He is most interested to study in Southeast Asia, especially Hong Kong, with its multi-cultural vibes and high-quality education. He considers CUHK to have unique advantages over other universities in Hong Kong, including its international reputation and academic atmosphere, as well as a wide range of general education programmes. He is looking forward to his university life at CUHK, especially its college system, beautiful campus and well-equipped facilities. He hopes to return to Mexico after graduation to participate in the rapidly growing entertainment industry.

Kuntapath Charusrojthanadech (Thailand, Biomedical Engineering)

Kuntapath entered the 2024 Miss Nations Thailand Beauty Pageant as the winner of the Miss Rayong City Thailand Pageant this year. She discovered CUHK at a university fair just before graduating from high school. She is impressed by the range of courses, scholarships and extra-curricular activities the university offers. She believes Hong Kong is an ideal place for her to learn Chinese language and culture and somewhere close to home. The admission officers and senior students of CUHK are very engaged in welcoming newcomers, feeding her with the latest updates about the university to help her prepare for the trip. The iBuddy programmes and orientation camps have helped her adapt to the new life here and allowed her to make friends even before the semester begins.

Dylan Bruce Lim Sam (Mauritius, Quantitative Finance and Risk Management)

Hong Kong’s status as a global financial centre and its rich blend of Chinese and Western cultures attracted Dylan Bruce to study in the city. CUHK’s QFRM programme caught his eye for its rigorous academic curriculum. He believes the programme and the excellent teaching would develop his essential skills to achieve career dreams in finance. He looks forward to participating in innovative research projects while also joining numerous extra-curricular activities at CUHK, alongside many bright students across disciplines. The late martial artist Bruce Lee’s saying “Be water, my friend” always inspires him to adapt to the challenges and seize the opportunities lying ahead. He plans to pursue a postgraduate degree in a finance-related area after graduation.

Chloe Thanh Pace (France, Bachelor of Laws)

Chloe has lived in Shanghai for many years and attended high school in Vietnam. Joining CUHK’s Faculty of Law, she is impressed by the faculty’s international perspective, practical and innovative curriculum design, rich and diverse exchange learning opportunities and mentorship programmes. Chloe is eager to embark on the university journey, try to learn in a new culture, participate in various activities and clubs to meet friends, develop her potential and understand her strengths, so that she can prepare herself for pursuing graduate studies in future.

Mainland students

The Qin brothers were awarded University Admission Scholarships in 2023 and 2024 respectively with excellent results in Gaokao. Elder brother Zijing, a lover of visual arts, has chosen Journalism and Communication and Sociology as he wishes to pursue career in the media industry. Younger brother Xujia has maintained outstanding grades every year and he likes playing football and the piano. His determination to apply for the university was further strengthened by his brother’s good experience at CUHK. Both brothers are determined to practice what they learn and contribute to society in future.

Zhang Jiantong (Qinghai, Social Science)

Zhang Jiantong looks forward to studying and living in the vibrant city of Hong Kong. She has won the national table tennis first-level player certificate and medals in provincial and municipal competitions for multiple times. She has also participated in national debate competitions on behalf of Qinghai Province in her high school years. She became interested in CUHK after hearing from seniors of her high school about its college system and the beautiful campus environment. She joined CUHK’s Department of Economics for its profound historical foundation, first-class academic achievements and good international reputation. She will make good use of the abundant resources and opportunities of the university to broaden her horizon. In the future, she hopes to engage in economic research.

Jiang Huanyun (Shanghai, Electronic Engineering)

Jiang Huanyun has been pursuing sports since childhood. During his time at high school, he has been awarded the top eight in football, the top three in tennis by his home city. He has obtained the National first-level tennis player certification. CUHK, with strong sports programmes and comprehensive sports facilities, is a natural choice for him. He looks forward to exploring his own potential and enhancing his learning and skills at CUHK.

Zuo Ruoxi (Xizang, Science)

Zuo Ruoxi, from Lhasa of Xizang, scored among the top 50 in the autonomous region in Gaokao and obtained a full tuition fee scholarship from CUHK to enrol in her favorite science major. In her spare time, Ruoxi enjoys participating in various sports and has won awards in athletics and badminton competitions. She is excited about the many exchange opportunities with the mainland and overseas institutions at CUHK, hoping to make friends from different backgrounds while also learning about cutting-edge technology and the latest international development trends.
