Preventing sexual harassment and discrimination on campus
CUHK is committed to preventing sexual harassment and discrimination through comprehensive education and training.
The University’s Committee Against Discrimination and Sexual Harassment (CADSH) has recently commissioned a survey to gauge insights into the awareness of harassment and discrimination on campus, and has been taking a well-rounded approach to tackle these issues.
Professor Lee Tan from the Electronic Engineering Department, who chairs CADSH, says: “Our goal is to ensure that every member of the CUHK community feels safe, respected and supported. By strengthening our education and training efforts, we are building a campus culture that stands firmly against discrimination and harassment.”
CADSH has a dedicated task force on education and training, and its panel against discrimination and sexual harassment handles relevant complaints and investigations.
For the start of the new academic year, CADSH has partnered with the Joint Committee on New Student Orientation to promote awareness among student organisers and facilitators of orientation camps. The initiative mandates the completion of an online training module and a seminar with speakers from the Equal Opportunities Commission and the University’s Diversity and Inclusion Office, addressing the relevant legal requirements and University policies.
CADSH also runs an Orientation Camp Sponsorship Programme which offers additional incentives to inspire student organisers to cover elements of anti-sexual harassment, equal opportunities, and inclusion during orientation activities.
To further bolster prevention efforts, capacity building workshops have been organised by the task force to enhance the skills and knowledge of teaching staff and supervisors in addressing harassment effectively, as they are often the first point of contact for students and staff with concerns.
Additionally, CADSH has created awareness posters to educate the University community about reporting and documenting incidents of harassment. These posters aim to empower individuals to speak out against unacceptable behaviour and seek help as appropriate.
