“Best with less” packaging design competition and exhibition at CUHK
CUHK’s Centre for Social Innovative Studies (CSIS) and catering company Maxim’s Group have jointly organised the “Best with Less Hong Kong Tertiary Institutions Sustainable Packaging (F&B Industry) Design Competition”, with eight shortlisted designs now on display at CUHK.
The roving exhibition, with contributions also from renowned designers, eco-material manufacturers and other stakeholders, was kickstarted at New Town Plaza last month, and will continue at other tertiary institutions in the coming months.
The competition has drawn submissions from students from various local tertiary institutions, which focused on making lunchboxes, cups, lids and containers with sustainable materials such as paper and bagasse. Outstanding designs with high practicality and cost-effectiveness may be adopted by Maxim’s Group in its restaurants.
CSIS is responsible for designing the overall concept and project outline for the competition. During the summer, CSIS organised a series of training workshops to help participating teams understand the government’s new single-use plastics ban policy, as well as the needs of customers and restaurant operations. It also introduced global perspectives on plastic reduction to students and Maxim’s staff. Students also paid visits to restaurants, where they gathered feedback from customers and frontline staff, ensuring the feasibility of their designs.
