CUHK Library initiates Diamond Open Access Megajournal Project for bilingual academic research

Recent report lays the foundation for platform dedicated to Hong Kong and mainland

The CUHK Library is planning to establish a reliable bilingual platform for publishing academic research from Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China, promoting open access in the academia in the region.

In an era when open access publishing is experiencing exponential growth worldwide, academic works are reaching ever broader audiences, especially in Europe and the United States. The CUHK Library aims to launch the innovative “Diamond OA Megajournal Project” to set up an open access publishing platform for research in social sciences, arts and humanities produced in the region, with a focus on Lingnan Studies and contemporary issues relevant to China and the world.

The project, aimed to be launched by 2026, will adopt a “Diamond Open Access” model, which enables both authors and readers to publish and access content freely, promoting knowledge sharing and advancing academic progress.

In September, the CUHK Library, in partnership with the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), released a report entitled “Diamond Open Access Megajournal Project: Reflection from CUHK Library”. The report outlines the vision and progress of the project and offers an overview of open access developments across Europe and the United States, contrasted with the current landscape in China. It highlights the equitable approach of the Diamond model and its potential impact in the Chinese context.

The Report also addresses challenges such as data security, stakeholder engagement and financial sustainability, while showcasing CUHK’s strategic initiatives for ensuring quality and governance. The project embodies CUHK’s commitment to open scholarship and its role in fostering a more inclusive and equitable research environment.
