Exchanging cultures and traditions on campus
Non-local students joined hands with the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) in the Cultural Extravaganza last month, presenting their diverse cultures to more than 3,000 staff and students.
The event on 31 October, organised by the OSA and held at the Cultural Square on the main campus, opened with a traditional Filipino folk dance and a fashion show by students.
Joining the audience was Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan, who emphasised the importance of embracing diversity on campus in his speech.
The event featured nine booths introducing the cultures of Central Asia, France, Germany, Indonesia, mainland China, Malaysia, Myanmar, Spain, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam, all hosted by CUHK’s non-local students and students from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages. They welcomed visitors with regional snacks, games, as well as language and art activities.
Arati Poudel, a postgraduate student from Nepal, said she was excited to participate in the fashion show: “As an international student, I felt proud to represent the rich cultural heritage of the Gurung community in Nepal. I also made new friends during the show, and the best part was learning to walk with confidence on stage.”
