In memory of former University Bursar David A. Gilkes

CUHK mourns the passing of Mr David A. Gilkes, former University Bursar, on 2 January 2025 at his residence in the United Kingdom.

A chartered accountant with a master’s degree in history from Oxford University, Mr Gilkes arrived in Hong Kong from the United Kingdom in 1967 with his family. He joined CUHK as Assistant Registrar (Finance) at a time when the Bursary and the Registry formed one unit. He took over as University Bursar in 1975 and retired on 30 September 1996, having served the University for a good 29 years. Under his leadership, CUHK was able to lay down a firm financial foundation for its subsequent development. In 1995, he received an MBE in recognition of his educational services to Hong Kong.
